Nicaragua, Environmental Protection and Renewable Energy

UNISON West Midlands Regional International Forum Delegation to Nicaragua.

In November 2025 myself and two other UNISON member colleagues, Nadieh Alipourian (Birmingham UNISON)  and Edoardo Fusi (West Midlands Combined Authority) had the pleasure of participating in the UNISON West Midlands Regional International Forum Delegation to Nicaragua.

We were there for nine days which was not near enough time, however we managed to scratch the surface of the beautiful land of lakes and volcanoes.  We were based in Managua which is the capital city and were hosted by members of the Nicaraguan trade unions, UNE – the public sector union and FETSALUD – the health workers union.

During our time there we visited so many wonderful and inspiring places, however I am going to focus on Alba Rivas wind farm and our meeting with MARENA the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources…
